Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a highly misunderstood functional bowel disorder known to have an increased prevalence in women. Diagnosis of IBS can be difficult as it is based nearly exclusively on a woman’s symptoms. It is also challenging to differentiate IBS from other functional bowel disorders, especially chronic constipation, because symptoms might overlap.

Clinician understanding of the disorder is critical to accurate diagnosis and lays the foundation for successful management.

One of the biggest obstacles clinicians face in treating IBS is simply the lack of available therapies. Effective therapeutic options for IBS have been limited, and recent product withdrawals have further reduced treatment choices; however, new treatment strategies are under investigation. Thus it is imperative that clinicians stay up-to-date on current developments in the diagnosis and availability of treatment choices in IBS.
