Updates in Movement Disorders: Cervical Dsytonia
Cervical dystonia is a potentially disabling movement disorder associated with abnormal head posture and pain, for which diagnosis is commonly either missed or delayed. Familial studies of focal dystonia have demonstrated that up to 25% of cervical dystonia patients have relatives that are affected by cervical dystonia but have never been diagnosed. The prevalence of cervical dystonia is difficult to ascertain and estimates range from 0.006%- 0.28%, with women more commonly affected than men. Cervical dystonia negatively impacts quality of life and can cause profound disability and pain in patients. General disability is more common in cervical dystonia than in other focal dystonias. Pain has been reported in 68%-75% of patients with cervical dystonia. Cervical dystonia has also been shown to have a substantial negative impact on quality of life that is comparable to that of Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, or stroke.
